Meet the Authors
The Story Behind Southern Chaos
The idea for Southern Chaos began long before the first chapter was written.
After founding Chaos Organizing in 2013, Martha-Carol Stewart filled notebooks with ideas, searching for a way to write about organizing that felt approachable instead of technical. Then a simple suggestion from her sister-in-law changed everything: "Write it from a Southern perspective."
She realized most organizing advice focused on owning less, while Southern homes are often filled with family heirlooms, holiday traditions, hospitality, and generations of memories. There was room for a different conversation.
In 2018, their daughter’s college housing dilemma unexpectedly reunited Martha-Carol with her longtime friend, Lisa. As they caught up, they discovered they shared not only a love of writing and organizing, but also a deep appreciation for Southern living. That conversation became the beginning of Southern Chaos, blending their experiences into a practical guide that helps readers create homes that function beautifully without sacrificing the traditions they cherish.
Today, Martha-Carol continues to share the principles of Southern Chaos through Chaos Organizing, speaking engagements, and by helping families across the South create homes that are both functional and welcoming. Whether she's organizing a pantry, preparing a family for a new baby, or helping someone downsize after decades in the same home, her mission remains the same: to create calm, one home at a time.
